Wastewater from your home flows into the septic tank. Solids settle to the bottom, while oils and floatables rise to the surface. Baffles in the septic tank prevent floatables from leaving the tank. They also prevent incoming wastewater from mixing with the previously settled solids.
Approximately half of all solids that enter the tank are decomposed by bacteria and microorganisms. As this process is slow, the remaining solids and floatables remain in the tank and accumulate over the years.
